So what is the function of a spark plug?

Essentially, spark plugs ignite the fuel and air mixture within the cylinder of your lawnmowers engine, thus, spark plugs play a very important role in your lawnmower. What happens is the the voltage electricity jumps the gap at the tip of every spark plug at the precise moment to trigger fuel combustion.

When your lawnmowers spark plug begins to slow electrically or gets dirty, the quality of spark within the engine will drop. This causes an incomplete fuel combustion leading to a lower engine performance and ultimately lawnmower performance.

CHECKING YOUR SPARK PLUG

First, remove your spark plug from your mower. Spark plugs are often at the side or back of your mowers engine. When located you will see a short wire on the top of the spark plug. Use your fingers to pull off the wire then use a spark plug wrench to loosen and remove it. (turn counter clockwise).

How is your plug looking? when in good condition your plug will appear a light grey/tan colour. Any oil deposits or baked on carbon indicates that your spark plug needs cleaning or has to be replaced.

You can, but there’s a good reason not to. Besides oil and carbon deposits creating that alternative electrical path, spark plugs can also fail electrically. This is why a used plug you’ve cleaned perfectly can still malfunction under load, failing to deliver an optimal spark inside the engine.
