Bypass Secateurs can still be used on older cuttings but a little more effort will be required by the user.; For older thicker stems, it is best to use an Anvil Secateurs to reduce the strain on the wrist and hand. With Anvil Secateurs the blade closes against a softer metal on the lower jaw, this does not produce such a clean cut as a Bypass secateurs, which is why it is not suited to younger stems but more to older wood where the cleanliness of the cut is not so important. Always consider the density of the wood you are cutting and ensure you have the right tool for the job.
